Lyrics Day Twenty Six – ‘Purpose’

Hey everyone,

today’s lyrics focus on the topic of purpose. For me, a person’s purpose is truly fascinating; first of all, what it is, but equally interesting is the question of why they want to achieve this goal. It all relates to character, and personality, and I believe that everybody has a purpose of some kind. I would love it if there were art exhibitions in towns and cities where people could draw or paint on the theme of their own purpose, without words. I think, no matter the quality of art displayed, it would be such a fascinating experience. I imagine looking at a piece of art and trying to understand the person behind it. To that end, it would be even better if you could then have a conversation with the artist, if they were willing.

I’ve always felt a strong sense of purpose, and it has guided me, both in major decisions and everyday life. If you’d like to have a conversation about purpose, and what it means to you, then by all means, please leave me a message – I’d love to speak about it 🙂 And, I hope that these lyrics can at least spark thoughts of your own purpose.

Stay well ~

Sean

Purpose (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

A blade thrusting forwards
It always seemed to guide me
meant that every failure
came with a silver lining

Coursing through my veins
shaping feelings and thoughts
never ever questioned
not a single retort

I won’t regret a thing
stay true to my goal
can’t bear the hurtful sting
of dismissing my resolve

Coursing through my veins
shaping feelings and thoughts
never ever questioned
not a single retort
it always stood beside me
overwhelming, but no surplus
has given my life meaning
fighting for a purpose

Purpose exists in everyone
even if undiscovered
and from the darkest depths
it can always be recovered
A glorious burden
can sometimes take its toll
but purpose is the basis
of your heart and soul

Coursing through my veins
shaping feelings and thoughts
never ever questioned
not a single retort
it always stood beside me
overwhelming, but no surplus
has given my life meaning
fighting for a purpose

Lyrics Day Twenty Five – ‘Subway’

Hey everyone,

today’s lyrics concern the subway, or ‘train station’ as I usually call it (I’m English, but subway sounds cooler, right?) I’ve always had a deep curiosity and fascination with the subway, imagining all of the stories of those people coming and going.

I guess you could say that I romanticised the ideas I had about those people’s lives, but often when I’ve been waiting for a train, I would just sit in awe, lost in my thoughts. Anyway, I hope that it comes through in today’s lyrics 🙂

Stay safe ~

Sean

Subway (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

Since I was young
it filled me with wonder
hundreds of people
gathered together

‘Where are you going?’
Wasn’t really my question
more ‘how you got here’
as I sat at the station

Pondered their journeys
each person travelling
stories in my mind
weaving and unravelling

‘Where are you going?’
Wasn’t really my question
more ‘how you got here’
as I sat at the station
Because everyone there
at different stages of life’s journey
a multitude of stories
to be found at the subway

One such tale, when I was younger
waiting to go home, sat with my brother
a large cubicle, to the left of the trains
looking through the manual, of our new game
Something so simple, made me so happy
can feel that moment now, with perfect clarity
it’s important to me, a fragment of my history
but on that day, mine was one of many stories

‘Where are you going?’
Wasn’t really my question
more ‘how you got here’
as I sat at the station
Because everyone there
at different stages of life’s journey
a multitude of stories
to be found at the subway

Lyrics Day Twenty Four – ‘Suffering’

Hey everyone,

today’s lyrics focus on suffering, but not exactly in relation to the current pandemic. Of course, they can be related to that, but I write about the unseen suffering that occurs on a daily basis, which can be very difficult to notice. I’ve found this especially in my volunteer work, where people reach out (over the phone) for the first time, having not told their families or closest friends about their issues.

However, there is a silver lining, and perhaps I could have called this song ’empathy’ instead. Because, as I write, I believe that is the fundamental cure to suffering. So again, during this current crisis and beyond, please reach out to others, see how they’re doing, and just as importantly, trust those around you to help you out too, if you’re struggling. Again, I should offer my support here – if you’re unable to do that, or don’t feel comfortable, please feel free to speak with me – I’m working again now, but will reply as soon as I’m able to.

Stay safe ~

Sean

Suffering (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

Phone calls with strangers
all manner of situations
trying to provide comfort
amidst their frustrations

Thought pain was clear to see
that was my mistake
unseen suffering abounds
truth is far more opaque

Consoled a friend just yesterday
seven years bereaved
hadn’t noticed her tears
more pain than I’d conceived

Thought pain was clear to see
that was my mistake
unseen suffering abounds
truth is far more opaque
the extent of their suffering
is dependent on me
there’s a way to make it clear
to increase my empathy

Walking with their head down
perhaps they aren’t just tired
a little understanding
is all that’s required
So many people
carrying unseen burdens
they’re screaming silently
it’s enough, if you heard them

Thought pain was clear to see
that was my mistake
unseen suffering abounds
truth is far more opaque
the extent of their suffering
is dependent on me
there’s a way to make it clear
to increase my empathy

Lyrics Day Twenty Three – ‘Aura’

Hey everyone,

today’s lyrics are written about a girl who I really cared about, back in university. Nothing ever happened; unfortunately she didn’t share my feelings, but I still feel lucky to have known her. In my mind, she had this sort of aura, something I felt whenever I saw her – that’s the best way I can describe it. She was on my mind recently, so I enjoyed writing these lyrics, and I hope that you like them too 🙂

Stay safe ~

Sean

Aura (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

Checking for your message
for over a day
but when it arrived
it was well worth the wait

A shining golden aura
accompanies your presence
can’t focus on what I’m doing
wonder where the time went

There’s something about,
a message from her
hands are trembling
emotions astir

A shining golden aura
accompanies your presence
can’t focus on what I’m doing
wonder where the time went
My feelings aren’t returned
but it doesn’t matter
because just to know you
is reward hereafter

The first day we met
I felt a fascination
so glad I decided
to trust my inclination
It wasn’t to be
but that’s okay
I experienced feelings
I may never recreate

A shining golden aura
accompanies your presence
can’t focus on what I’m doing
wonder where the time went
My feelings aren’t returned
but it doesn’t matter
because just to know you
is reward hereafter

Lyrics Day Twenty Two – ‘Life’

Hey everyone,

when I originally wrote these lyrics a few days ago, I just heard news that somebody I’d known from school had unfortunately passed away. I can’t say that he was a close friend, but of course it was sad, especially when somebody dies at a young age. His death was in no way related to the current pandemic, however, I have found myself considering the fragility of life during this period, and on this day, I found my mind naturally focused on that topic.

Stay safe ~

Sean

Life (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

Heard news this morning
that his life has ended
a cheerful classmate
who I’d once befriended

Forced me to ponder
the fragility of living
all of its wonder
and my misgivings

We weren’t really close
hadn’t spoken in a while
but I’ll always remember
that beaming smile

Forced me to ponder
the fragility of living
all of its wonder
and my misgivings
But life is so beautiful
even if short lived
I’ll take some time
respecting the privilege

What were his thoughts
on that final day?
His final moments
before passing away
I hope he remembered
all the joy that he gave
there’s an army of people
sharing those memories

Forced me to ponder
the fragility of living
all of its wonder
and my misgivings
But life is so beautiful
even if short lived
I’ll take some time
respecting the privilege

Lyrics Day Twenty One – ‘Pact on the Bridge’

Hey everyone,

today’s lyrics are little nostalgic, as I reminisce about a moment a few years back where my two best friends and I made a pact on a bridge, in the city we often visited. Enjoy, and stay safe 🙂

Sean

Pact on the Bridge (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

Our friendship consisted
of moments like this
making future promises
the pact on the bridge

Promised that we’d live
in this city someday
staring out at the river
towards the end of May

I still remember
those glorious times
spending time with you both
the honour was all mine

Promised that we’d live
in this city someday
staring out at the river
towards the end of May
If I could I’d travel
to that bridge every day
but I’ll keep my promise
live in this city someday

Should have seen you more,
if I’m being honest
seems like some time
since we made that promise
Things are a little different now
it’s all my fault
but the memories, and promises
are forever in my vault

Promised that we’d live
in this city someday
staring out at the river
towards the end of May
If I could I’d travel
to that bridge every day
but I’ll keep my promise
live in this city someday

Lyrics Day Twenty – ‘Guilt’

Hey everyone,

with today’s lyrics I reflect on the only relationship I’ve had, which lasted a year, ending last May. I’ve titled the song ‘guilt’ – although this girl was really amazing, I just felt my feelings diminish over time, for whatever reason, and so I had to end it. The problem was that she didn’t feel the same way, and my guilt continues to this day. I haven’t spoken with her since, so perhaps she is happy, but I’m not sure. As I point out in the song, I really wish for her happiness, and hope that I can see a photo online somewhere, someday.

Stay safe ~

Sean

Guilt (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

Funny how a scent, or image
evokes a plethora of emotions
still wondering why I deserved
to be the object of your devotion

Everything you offered
so sorry I didn’t appreciate
I’ll spend the rest of my life,
reflecting on my mistakes

Thinking back on all the times
you encouraged me quietly
never overstated, and offered
with complete sincerity

Everything you offered
so sorry I didn’t appreciate
I’ll spend the rest of my life,
reflecting on my mistakes
Thank you for the time
you spent getting to know me
You’ll be perfect for someone
I’ll always feel guilty

I imagine you with him
smile shining brightly
at that place you love
standing by the sea
He’s just proposed
the start of your future
I’ll feel a little better
when I see that picture

Everything you offered
so sorry I didn’t appreciate
I’ll spend the rest of my life,
reflecting on my mistakes
Thank you for the time
you spent getting to know me
You’ll be perfect for someone
I’ll always feel guilty

Lyrics Day Nineteen – ‘Pride’

Hey everyone,

It’s been really interesting writing more about personal feelings and experiences, and that’s what today’s topic is focused on. I won’t go too deeply in it, but I’m extremely principled, and several years ago, I felt that a friend made a mistake, so we haven’t really spoken since then. Now, thinking back, I’m not sure if I was right or wrong (hence, when I write ‘still have my pride’, it’s sort of ironic). Anyway, enjoy, and stay safe.

Sean

Pride (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

Lost someone essential
didn’t agree with his actions
despite his protestation
couldn’t change my reaction

Doing what you feel is right
the path is not always smooth
but perhaps it was stubbornness
I had something to prove

As the years went by
I started to wonder
if retaining my principles
was my greatest blunder

Doing what you feel is right
the path is not always smooth
but perhaps it was stubbornness
I had something to prove
Two decades of friendship
and memories besides
I lost it all
but still have my pride

Sometimes I think back
to those halcyon days
trips to the city
cinema and subway
I’m not alone but lonelier
without your presence
and I often question
that fateful decision

Doing what you feel is right
the path is not always smooth
but perhaps it was stubbornness
I had something to prove
Two decades of friendship
and memories besides
I lost it all
but still have my pride

Lyrics Day Eighteen – ‘Inequality’

Hey everyone,

today’s lyrics focus focus mainly on the topic of inequality. Since I was a kid, I had a dream to help others, but as time has passed, I’ve realised just how many people need help. When I say that, I don’t mean it literally, however, through my volunteer work, I speak with many people who are suffering, and of course from the news and documentaries, we’re all aware of the problems faced in third world countries. People are suffering, not just on a global level, but individually, too.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve tried through voluntary projects and small monthly charity donations to help, and improvements are being made, but still these problems persist. I spoke with a friend a few weeks ago, and I said that I want to end all unnecessary suffering. Some suffering, unfortunately, will always occur in life – the pain of loss, perhaps in relationships etc; we can help people cope with that, but we can’t prevent it. However, I’ve certain that we can end many of the problems that we see in the world today. I’m currently training to be a therapist, and that’s one way I can help, but I also realised recently that I’d like to be in the Government, when I’m older. Politics has never been of interest to me, because generally I never found anybody who I could believe in, aside from Barack Obama.

However, I think the solution then, is to become somebody that people can believe in, so while I still intend to be a therapist, I believe having a position in the Government allows you the opportunity to enforce a great deal of positive change, so that’s gonna be my goal in the future too, in order to realise the dream I’ve always held. Anyway, enough about me, I hope you find the lyrics interesting and perhaps thought-provoking.

Stay safe ~

Sean

Inequality (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

Morsels for you,
banquets for me
always left puzzled
by such inequality

Those who are hungry
forced into starvation
are praying for the time
which ends their deprivation

It’s an unfortunate fact
despite the dichotomy
even those with wealth
can suffer endlessly
struggling with emotions
or a lack of necessities
forces me to consider
the panacea’s recipe

Those who are hungry
forced into starvation
are praying for the time
which ends their deprivation
But problems abound
all across the globe
thousands are screaming
‘save our weary souls’

Let’s stand up, together
no more bluffing
to conquer any problem
and unnecessary suffering
shout it from the rooftops
‘I’ve made a resolution –
I’ll dedicate my life
to end their destitution’

Those who are hungry
forced into starvation
are praying for the time
which ends their deprivation
But problems abound
all across the globe
thousands are screaming
‘save our weary souls’

Lyrics Day Seventeen – ‘NHS’

Hey everyone,

today’s lyrics shouldn’t need too much explaining; I just wanted, even in a small way, to give my thanks to all of the NHS and frontline staff out there, risking their lives to protect us, not only through this crisis, but on a daily basis. Thank you, sincerely – you have my highest respect.

Sean

NHS (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

The truest of ventures
to save somebody’s life
seems like common practice
we forget their strife

Often hear the sirens
piercing through the air
whilst I’m inside dawdling
they have no time to spare

Staff unable to sleep
protecting you and me both
caring for our loved ones
staying true to their oath

Often hear the sirens
piercing through the air
whilst I’m inside dawdling
they have no time to spare
Every second counts
on such a noble quest
to each and every one I say –
‘thank you, NHS’

Endless preparation
ensuring the best of care
sheltering your family
less time with theirs
and for all the emergencies
faced from day to day
countless staff members
come to our aid

Often hear the sirens
piercing through the air
whilst I’m inside dawdling
they have no time to spare
Every second counts
on such a noble quest
to each and every one I say –
‘thank you, NHS’
