Lyrics Day Fifty Seven – ‘Comfortable’

Hey everyone,

today’s lyrics are focused on some reflections I’ve had recently, how I’ve been far too comfortable over these past few years. I think when reading this back, I have been a little harsh on myself – I have made some progress during that time, but I suffer with social Anxiety, and because of that, my life has been very safe, rather than challenging, and progressive.

Again, it’s not like I’ve made no progress with it, but when it comes to the crucial points (taking risks, entering new situations), I often refuse. Part of this is due to my introverted nature, but from my studies and research, I know how to solve this problem, or at the very least improve it, and I have to accept that I haven’t taken those steps. I believe that in order to truly grow, we must challenge ourselves, and these words reflect on that.

Stay safe ~

Comfortable (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

Been way too comfortable
these past few years
living under the guise of progress
barely facing my fears

Living in this way
I have no excuse
never challenging myself
becoming a recluse

It was far too easy
to stay sitting down
but I only have one life
if there’s a chance, it’s now

Living in this way
I have no excuse
never challenging myself
becoming a recluse
Wanted to apologise
to myself at twenty five
you had such high hopes
I’ll try to keep them alive

It seems like my strategy
in coping with strife
was to stay by myself
opting out of life
I have sympathy for myself
Sure, Anxiety is hard
but I’ll strive to be better
hold myself in high regard

Living in this way
I have no excuse
never challenging myself
becoming a recluse
Wanted to apologise
to myself at twenty five
you had such high hopes
I’ll try to keep them alive

Lyrics Day Fifty Six – ‘Empty Space’

Hey everyone,

today’s lyrics were written on a topic that had crossed my mind recently. Have you ever visited a place which held special memories for you, but on return, you didn’t have the same feeling? In writing about it this way, it seems rather obvious, but I realised that, at least for me, whilst there are undoubtedly a large number of beautiful environments around the world, it’s truly the experience of sharing that makes the moment worthwhile.

It’s true that you can experience wonderful moments alone, but I feel like that feeling is always heightened with others. On several occasions, I’ve found myself at spots where poignant conversations or special moments occurred for me, but just experiencing this feeling of emptiness; like, I could remember everything that happened as fully as I wanted, but without somebody to share those feelings with, it was almost meaningless.

Stay safe ~

Sean

Empty Space (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

Hoping to evoke a little warmth
I visited our tree
but all I found was emptiness
because it was only me

Walking up those steps
memories and feelings encased
but without you there,
it’s just an empty space

This scenery is beautiful
but it’s just bricks and mortar
with all of you beside me
that’s a ‘happily ever after’

Walking up those steps
memories and feelings encased
but without you there,
it’s just an empty space
I’ve now come to realise
those times can’t be replaced
What makes a memory?
It’s the people, not the place

As I stood at the bridge
looking out over the city
hundreds of people walking
wished you were with me
When the train arrived
I was so excited to depart
the friend stood beside me
always in my heart

Walking up those steps
memories and feelings encased
but without you there,
it’s just an empty space
I’ve now come to realise
those times can’t be replaced
What makes a memory?
It’s the people, not the place

Lyrics Day Fifty Five – ‘Jazz’

Hey everyone,

today’s lyrics were written about a strong feeling I had recently, evoked by the wonderful sound of jazz music. I’d finished my work a little early, and so I put on some jazz. I love the way it makes me feel; so calm, but imaginative, at the same time. On this particular occasion, I gazed out onto the balcony and imagined what was for me, a special scene.

Towards the end of the piece, I also reflect on the desire to make these imaginings a reality – often, I’m guilty of dreaming up a lot of amazing scenarios, but feel too fearful to take action, and make them happen.

I hope that you enjoy these words, and perhaps they can help you to reflect on your own hopes and wishes 🙂

Stay safe ~

Sean

Jazz (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

Heard the sounds of soft piano
accompanied by gentle strings
caused my mind to wander
imagined all manner of things

Purple coloured the skies
as you stood out on the balcony
light glistening in your eyes
realised what you meant to me

Somehow the slow sounds
paused the world around us
time came to a standstill
each second was momentous

Purple coloured the skies
as you stood out on the balcony
light glistening in your eyes
realised what you meant to me
Staring out into the sky
stood together in silence
interlocking hands
I was lost in that moment

I must be dreaming again
my eyes are moistening
reality’s grip is tough
each passing second tightening
But my life is my own
I don’t have any excuses
I can break out of my shell
stop being so reclusive

Purple coloured the skies
as you stood out on the balcony
light glistening in your eyes
realised what you meant to me
Staring out into the sky
stood together in silence
interlocking hands
I was lost in that moment

Lyrics Day Fifty Four – ‘Comfort’

Hey everyone,

my fifty fourth set of lyrics sees the final chapter in my miniseries, describing the qualities of my best friends. I guess in this case, ‘comfort’ itself doesn’t really describe their personality, but it felt right, because I feel so comfortable around them. Do you have anybody in your life like that? Who you feel happy to share anything with, and comfortable enough in their presence that you can just be silent together? I’m very lucky to call this person a best friend 🙂

Stay safe ~

Sean

Comfort (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

Always gave me comfort
right from the start
made me feel at ease
with your warm and gentle heart

Usually around pretty girls
I begin to feel so shy
but there’s a special connection
between you and I

thanks for always being there
to listen to my endless thinking
your other friends aren’t like me
but this ship shows so signs of sinking

Usually around pretty girls
I begin to feel so shy
but it’s a special connection
between you and I
Can sit and talk for hours
so many topics to ponder
‘I’m so lucky to have found you’
I think, as my mind begins to wander

Watching shows together
for almost seven years
a silent bond between us
a connection that is clear
If I’m being honest
what’s on screen doesn’t matter
because I’m spending time with you
engaging in life’s meaningful chatter

Usually around pretty girls
I begin to feel so shy
but it’s a special connection
between you and I
Can sit and talk for hours
so many topics to ponder
‘I’m so lucky to have found you’
I think, as my mind begins to wander

Lyrics Day Fifty Three – ‘Purple Haze’

Hey everyone,

I’m taking a short intermission from the lyrics about my friends to present my feelings about the sky I saw as I left work on Monday evening. It’s the colour of sky you only see during the summer evenings – a combination of purples, blues and a warm orange, before darkness falls and the stars come into view.

As I looked up at this sky, I began to imagine different scenarios, most involving my friends, and I suddenly wanted them to see this sky with me. It was a powerful feeling, and so I wrote about these lyrics on Tuesday morning. Hope you enjoy 🙂

Stay safe ~

Sean

Purple Haze (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

Saw the coalescing colours
not for the first time
but a host of hopeful images
began racing through my mind

Trees became black silhouettes
as the sky was illuminated
suddenly began to imagine
all that I appreciated

It only appears on a summers night
the orange, purple and blue
sat in peaceful partnership
made me think of all of you

Trees became black silhouettes
as the sky was illuminated
suddenly began to imagine
all that I appreciated
considering what I wished for
my mind was in a daze
contented smile on my face
looking up at that purple haze

The colours on show evoked
scenes that I hoped for
lasting bonds and friendships
written into my lore
but back to reality I snapped
hit with a sudden realisation
‘it requires tremendous effort
to reach that destination’

Trees became black silhouettes
as the sky was illuminated
suddenly began to imagine
all that I appreciated
considering what I wished for
my mind was in a daze
contented smile on my face
looking up at that purple haze

Lyrics Day Fifty Two – ‘Sincerity’

Hey everyone,

today’s lyrics are written about the defining quality of another of my best friends – sincerity. I could have also called the poem ‘assertive’, but I think sincerity carries with it a softer feeling. This friend always tell you exactly how they’re feeling, whether it’s good or bad. But, it’s never delivered in a negative way, just honestly. I really respected that, right from the start, and to be honest, as I’ve spoken about before, I wish that I could be more assertive. So, to be friends with somebody who says they how they feel simply because they have self-respect, it’s really my honour to know that person.

Stay well ~

Sean

Sincerity (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

The depth of your sincerity
was clear from the start
feelings out in the open
never held in your heart

I’ll always remember
sitting down for coffee
‘We’ll be friends for life’
is what you told me

Highlighted my strengths and flaws
as we sat at the station
always trying to help me
nothing left to the imagination

I’ll always remember
sitting down for coffee
‘We’ll be friends for life’
is what you told me
Always true to yourself
no matter who’s beside
one hundred percent sincere
to everything felt inside

Thanks to you
a friend more like family
inviting me out
never tired of my company
I never understood that
why you spent so much time with me
but honestly I know
you’d leave if you weren’t happy

I’ll always remember
sitting down for coffee
‘We’ll be friends for life’
is what you told me
Always true to yourself
no matter who’s beside
one hundred percent sincere
to everything felt inside

Lyrics Day Fifty One – ‘Best, Mysterious Girl’

Hey everyone,

today’s lyrics are about another of my best friends, but I have to say, she still remains a mystery to me. I really care about this girl; honestly, when she’s around, or when I think of her, I can’t think of anything else. But, in truth, I’ve probably only formed a tiny dent in the armour that surrounds her. I could talk about this all day (but don’t worry, I won’t)! Instead, I hope the lyrics that I’ve written help you to reflect on relationships within your own lives.

Stay safe ~

Sean

Best, Mysterious Girl (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

From the moment I saw you
felt only captivation
but hidden within your eyes
sadness, and frustration

I was fooled by your smile
never noticed your pain
you called me your hero
but what did you gain?

Last week I almost felt like
somebody you loved
but when will you reply?
Probably not for months

I was fooled by your smile
never noticed your pain
you called me your hero
but what did you gain?
I wish you would trust me
go on, give it a whirl
still trying to understand
my best, mysterious girl

Some called it infatuation
but I knew it was love
every time I saw you
couldn’t help but think of
a way to ease your pain
to see that beautiful smile
help you to see the light
even for a short while

I was fooled by your smile
never noticed your pain
you called me your hero
but what did you gain?
I wish you would trust me
go on, give it a whirl
still trying to understand
my best, mysterious girl

Lyrics Day Fifty – ‘Honour’

Hey everyone,

(50 sets of lyrics – nice!)

Today’s 50th set of lyrics are dedicated to my friend who always retains his honour. The lyrics are simple to understand, but do touch on the way that a person can inspire and change you, as they become an important part of your life. As I mentioned last time, I really love this idea, and writing these lyrics gives me the chance to look back on my relationship with amazing friends, reflecting on how they’ve changed me for the better.

Stay safe ~

Sean

Honour (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

It was difficult to see
when we first met
but you carry an honour
which surpasses the rest

Always taking time to check in
never straying from your values
it’s quiet and unannounced
but inspiration often leaves residue

The way we laugh together
reminds me of someone from the past
I lost that friendship
but this one is built to last

Always taking time to check in
never straying from your values
it’s quiet and unannounced
but inspiration often leaves residue
Every time I see you
it reminds me to be better
pride, dedication, honour
you follow those traits to the letter

Three years spent at Uni
before we lived together
I’ll always cherish those times
when life changes like the weather
You have a new home now
but we’re forever connected
for living with honour
it’s you I’ve respected

Always taking time to check in
never straying from your values
it’s quiet and unannounced
but inspiration often leaves residue
Every time I see you
it reminds me to be better
pride, dedication, honour
you follow those traits to the letter

Lyrics Day Forty Nine – ‘Spirit’

Hey everyone,

today’s lyrics are the second in this mini-series where I describe the qualities of my best friends. This friend is so inspiring, and as the title gives away, so full of spirit. It’s interesting because I’m very shy and reserved, very introverted, and this person is the complete opposite of that. But, in the years we’ve known one another, we’ve taught each other a lot.

I think that’s the wonderful thing about life; everybody has a different perspective, and when we connect together, we can develop and grow. I’m very lucky to have met this person, and here are their lyrics 🙂

Stay safe ~

Sean

Spirit (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

You asked for my details
as soon as we met
you weren’t even phased
free-spirited, and direct

For someone like me
pausing at each turn
I look at you, smiling
‘I have so much to learn’

With each and every action
you continue to step ahead
not without fear
but never with regret

For someone like me
pausing at each turn
I look at you, smiling
‘I have so much to learn’
The depth of your bravery
seems to know no limits
soaring through the sky
with your unbreakable spirit

You said that my questions
helped you to think in new ways
and in exchange
I should act without delay
I’m still on the ground
I hope you’ll forgive me
you’ll continue to soar
please stay in my vicinity

For someone like me
pausing at each turn
I look at you, smiling
‘I have so much to learn’
The depth of your bravery
seems to know no limits
soaring through the sky
with your unbreakable spirit

Lyrics Day Forty Eight – ‘Loyalty’

Hey everyone,

I had an idea recently that I’d like to write about each of my best friends; not by name, but through describing their personalities. I liked the idea of doing it in this way, and perhaps if I look back and still enjoy what I’ve written, I can present these words to each of them as gifts, at some point 🙂

Stay safe ~

Sean

Loyalty (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

Always taking time
to check in on me
loyal since we met
when we were sixteen

Honest to a fault
even when those faults are your own
but honestly I don’t see them
only how much you’ve grown

Out of all of my friends
you know me best
I knew from early on
my trust, I’d invest

Honest to a fault
even when those faults are your own
but honestly I don’t see them
only how much you’ve grown
Standing tall with a strong will
dignity always preserved
I hope that life gives you
everything you deserve

You lived just ten miles away
for those first sixteen years
and now a lifetime awaits us
both facing our fears
but you don’t have to worry
we’ll face them together
the tale of our friendship
will be inscribed forever

Honest to a fault
even when those faults are your own
but honestly I don’t see them
only how much you’ve grown
Standing tall with a strong will
dignity always preserved
I hope that life gives you
everything you deserve
