Lyrics Day 329 – ‘Video Game Dream’

Hey everyone,

once when I walked home after a evening shift, I noticed flashing lights emanating from a first floor window. It turned out to be somebody playing games, videos playing on one monitor, and gaming on another. Perhaps because it reminds me of my childhood, playing games with my brothers, but there’s something incredible soothing about that sort of scene – seeing somebody immersed in that world, in a comfortable setting.

Stay safe ~

Sean

Video Game Dream (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

Through a window I noticed
a gamer with multiple screens
instantly I felt comforted
sparked something inside of me

Imagine getting in from work
putting on my headphones
embraced by neon lights
different world, in the zone

Lock the doors
turn off all the lights
gentle warmth of the screen
bask in simple delights

Imagine getting in from work
putting on my headphones
embraced by neon lights
different world, in the zone
an escape from reality
the contentment that brings
reminds me as a child
before all those other things

My place is great
says a lot about me
but sometimes I wonder
if I had lots of money
I’d buy tonnes of collectibles
framed inspirational images
a reminder of childhood
claw at the vestiges

Imagine getting in from work
putting on my headphones
embraced by neon lights
different world, in the zone
an escape from reality
the contentment that brings
reminds me as a child
before all those other things

Lyrics Day 328 – ‘Rooftop’

Hey everyone,

have you ever seen the shows (or indeed, in real life) where a group of friends sit on a rooftop, and look out over the city? I love that idea, and have written some lyrics about those thoughts 🙂

Stay safe ~

Sean

Rooftop (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

Through those years together
Away from the world we’d hide
Looking out, over the rooftop
Spirits side by side

We saw the entire city
Lit up on darkened nights
An amalgamation of colour
Such a beautiful sight

We’d point at them, glistening
And wondered who’d reside
In those faraway places
Tiny points of light

We saw the entire city
Lit up on darkened nights
An amalgamation of colour
Such a beautiful sight
And on countless occasions
We’d laugh until we cried
A place to call our own
That rooftop, by the riverside

Staying up until the morning
Watching the sun rise
Over a peaceful city
Right before our eyes
Every single building
Bathed in a golden glow
We sat side by side
A heaven only we could know

We saw the entire city
Lit up on darkened nights
An amalgamation of colour
Such a beautiful sight
And on countless occasions
We’d laugh until we cried
A place to call our own
That rooftop, by the riverside

Lyrics Day 327 – ‘Clouds’

Hey everyone,

on my way to work recently, I noticed a wonderful section of clouds in the sky; filled with colour and light. With today’s lyrics, I hope to describe that scene as much as possible, and I’ve thought about the nature and beauty of clouds, too 🙂

Stay safe ~

Sean

Clouds (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

Saw a magnificent image
Up above in the sky
Almost like a mountain range
True nature it belied

Beautiful colours burst
Through cavernous regions
Thankful for the morning light
Consequence of the season

If you’re looking for beauty
Look up at the clouds
A fine example of the majesty
In the nature that abounds

Beautiful colours burst
Through cavernous regions
Thankful for the morning light
Consequence of the season
Amidst the orange and purple
Through those images they sort
First experiencing pareidolia
I wonder what they thought

At times like these
Often consider the reason
Why the sun shines on this planet
From an optimum distance
Surely one explanation
If any were required
Was the chance to see those skies
Can’t help but feel inspired

Beautiful colours burst
Through cavernous regions
Thankful for the morning light
Consequence of the season
Amidst the orange and purple
Through those images they sort
First experiencing pareidolia
I wonder what they thought

Lyrics Day 326 – ‘Goblins’

Hey everyone,

I’ve mentioned before that I love to lose myself in fantasy worlds and stories, and Goblins have always been a point of interest for me. I guess, because I live with a high degree of responsibility, creatures who act on their base desires, always looking after their self interests are quite interesting, and even provide a degree of comfort. Today, I’ve written some lyrics based on those themes 🙂

Stay safe ~

Sean

Goblins (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

They creep around, watching
with those bright yellow eyes
desperate for gold
eyes fixated on the prize

Within touching distance
in the shadows they hide
keeping track of my steps
speak nothing of pride

Used to engage
in amicable conversation
but over time it boiled over
they relented to frustration

Within touching distance
in the shadows they hide
keeping track of my steps
speak nothing of pride
they fill the old taverns
overt yet still listening
for any hints of wealth
see their eyes glistening

There’s talk of a group
no honour, or creed
simply harming others
in the name of greed
wonder what became
of our race of goblins
I have to put a stop
to this culture of robbing

Within touching distance
in the shadows they hide
keeping track of my steps
speak nothing of pride
they fill the old taverns
overt yet still listening
for any hints of wealth
see their eyes glistening

Lyrics Day 325 – ‘Spring Cleaning’

Hey everyone,

I had a week off work recently, and just took some time to go through all of my belongings, in cupboards/drawers etc, and either organise them or throw them away. My apartment was always clean, but I realised, when I was finished, how just keeping old things hidden away isn’t helpful, especially when you don’t need them. It seems like a relatively small thing, but the relief I felt once I’d finished, and change to my motivation, is astounding. Now, everything is organised, and has its place. There’s nothing in my apartment that I don’t want or need, which feels great!

Stay safe ~

Sean

Spring Cleaning (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

Went through my apartment
opened every cupboard door
siphoned through belongings
cross-legged on the floor

Such a sense of relief
throwing those things away
wondering why not sooner
reasons for my delay

It was all too simple
in just a matter of hours
small efforts, basic actions
in purpose, I was showered

Such a sense of relief
throwing those things away
wondering why not sooner
reasons for my delay
documents and possessions
everything in its place
leaves me free to live
with clarity and grace

Just as I thought
motivation is perpetual
it allowed me to step
and continue the cycle
started making lists
thinking about the future
mentality hardening
removing those sutures

Such a sense of relief
throwing those things away
wondering why not sooner
reasons for my delay
documents and possessions
everything in its place
leaves me free to live
with clarity and grace

Lyrics Day 324 – ‘Hospitals’

Hey everyone,

today’s lyrics share my admiration for those working in and around hospitals – honestly, the words aren’t nearly enough to describe the respect that I hold for these people. My blog isn’t world known, so perhaps the chances are slim, but I really hope that somebody working in the medical field gets the opportunity to read this – keep up the great work! 🙂

Stay safe ~

Sean

Hospitals (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

For many it’s understandable
they represent a place of fear
but it shouldn’t be discounted
the miracles that happen here

Daily string of diagnoses
from years of experience
countless hours of study
reveal the smallest of symptoms

Mental and physical health
patients’ pain making them numb
responding to call to arms
heroes, every single one

Daily string of diagnoses
from years of experience
countless hours of study
reveal the smallest of symptoms
and working long hours
fighting for the cause
every single one of them
worthy of applause

And the immediate decisions
made during surgery
could make the difference
stability or emergency
don’t know how they do it
I can say with certainty
they’re a level above me
even on my best day

Daily string of diagnoses
from years of experience
countless hours of study
reveal the smallest of symptoms
and working long hours
fighting for the cause
every single one of them
worthy of applause

Lyrics Day 323 – ‘Frugality’

Hey everyone,

in attempting to save for the next step of my life, I’ve set out a figure that I need to reach, and have shaped my daily life around doing so. Over time, I’ve noticed a shift in mind-set, where I’m barely treating myself, and always considering if I actually need things before buying them. This is good in a sense, and has meant that I’m getting closer to my target, but I do worry about the lasting effects of this mentality.

Stay safe ~

Sean

Frugal (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

For years and years
I’ve been trying to save
limited myself to scraps
for the future I crave

Time at my desk
spent calculating budgets
how to save the most money
with limited resources

Looking at treats online
know I must resist
to achieve my goal sooner
should continue to persist

Time at my desk
spent calculating budgets
how to save the most money
with limited resources
learned to live on the basics
and the skill of frugality
hope the sacrifice is worth it
brings the best out of me

Now I see why my parents
didn’t buy cereal with characters
only paying for the box
wasting precious resources
I was always inclined
to earn my rewards
still I hope this frugality
doesn’t put me to the sword

Time at my desk
spent calculating budgets
how to save the most money
with limited resources
learned to live on the basics
and the skill of frugality
hope the sacrifice is worth it
brings the best out of me

Lyrics Day 322 – ‘Dream’

Hey everyone,

I’ve had a very similar dream (or at least, a dream with the same environment) twice in a row recently, and thought it would be interesting to write about. It contained a stone bridge, and where it connects to the ground, there were doors on each side. One door held a messy room, another a clean room (though I couldn’t make out the contents completely accurately). I explain a little more in the lyrics, but it’s interesting, isn’t it? From my understanding of dreams from a psychological perspective, they’re essentially longings of the unconscious mind – wants/needs/thoughts which come to the fore as you sleep. Also, dreaming of the same environment twice was very interesting, and only the second time that it’s happened to me. Feel free to comment with any suggestions on what it could mean!

Stay safe ~

Sean

Dream (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

There was a bridge
and on either side a door
one revealed a mess
the other tidy, carpet on the floor

Another man entered first
whilst I waited for my friend
but I was forced to leave
when she couldn’t attend

One part dirty, the other clean
wondered if it represented
two contrasting sides
of my personality

Another man entered first
whilst I waited for my friend
but I was forced to leave
when she couldn’t attend
I hurriedly stepped away
feeling a great sense of relief
I woke up moments later
tripping over a tree

And I felt confused
when I first awoke
I’d visited that scene
a few weeks ago
the context was different
but environment the same
a similar dream twice
wondered what was to blame

Another man entered first
whilst I waited for my friend
but I was forced to leave
when she couldn’t attend
I hurriedly stepped away
feeling a great sense of relief
I woke up moments later
tripping over a tree

Lyrics Day 321 – ‘Lottery’

Hey everyone,

During our conversation based on the Proust questionnaire, my friend and I got to speaking about the journey of life, and how for both of us, the actions and intentions you have in life, are more important than the end result. I then brought up the example of the lottery, and said that if I somehow won, I wouldn’t keep a penny for myself, because I wouldn’t have done anything to earn it. She was surprised at this, but it is true – as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realised that it’s not the destination that matters, but how you arrive there. If I can live my life with all my efforts, and abiding by my principles, I’m sure that I’ll be content at the end.

Stay safe ~

Sean

Lottery (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

If my fate were decided
by six random numbers
I wouldn’t deserve it
dignity would plunder

I’d let go of that money
give to those more deserving
it’s worth nothing to me
unless I myself do the earning

Big houses, fancy cars
depends how they arrived
being given instantly
feels shallow and contrived

I’d let go of that money
give to those more deserving
it’s worth nothing to me
unless I myself do the earning
what is a destination
without experiencing the journey?
In my own eyes I’d remain
static and unworthy

Not that there’s a problem
with receiving some money
some people think me strange
describe my thinking as ‘funny’
Could come crashing down
this lottery of life
but that’s exactly why
by my principles I’ll abide

I’d let go of that money
give to those more deserving
it’s worth nothing to me
unless I myself do the earning
what is a destination
without experiencing the journey?
In my own eyes I’d remain
static and unworthy

Lyrics Day 320 – ‘Fascination’

Hey everyone,

over the past few days, my friend and I have been giving our responses to the Proust Questionnaire, and it’s been amazing to be able to do that. There are 35 questions in total, and yesterday, in an almost 2 hour conversation, we only got through the first 6. And for me that’s great, because I’m able to have an in-depth conversation with somebody who can think in that way, on that level. In my opinion, there’s nothing more fascinating that somebody’s personality and beliefs, and how they came to be. Today’s lyrics express these thoughts 🙂

Stay safe ~

Sean

Fascination (Verse, Half Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus)

Gave her a list
of thirty five questions
my mind began whirring
at the mere suggestion

Beliefs and fears
share an equal fascination
always want to consider
their starting location

In response to her fears
she replied with one word
made my long description
seem a little absurd

Beliefs and fears
share an equal fascination
always want to consider
their starting location
why people think and feel
in the ways that they do
the reasons are all different
they make up me and you

And whilst I consider
the nature of their origin
she gives another answer
which deserves contemplation
a remarkable viewpoint
so different from my own
enhancing my perspective
seeds have been sown

Beliefs and fears
share an equal fascination
always want to consider
their starting location
why people think and feel
in the ways that they do
the reasons are all different
they make up me and you
